10 Simple Ways to Celebrate the Canonization of Mother Teresa with Your Family

This post contains affiliate links.

Did you hear?  Mother Teresa of Calcutta will be canonized a Saint this Sunday, September 4, 2016!!!

The canonization of another Saint is worth celebrating for sure! I want my children to be excited about this historic day like the day that 2 Popes were canonized (Saint John XXII and Saint John Paul II) on Divine Mercy Sunday in 2014! One way we celebrated the canonization of the 2 Popes was by making a lapbook.  Maybe I'll find a fun Mother Teresa lapbook to do with my children soon...

It is my hope that this blog post of some ideas/links that I have collected will inspire others (and myself) to honor and celebrate such a beautiful servant of God with our families.

1. So how does a person become a canonized Saint?  Watch this video about how the Catholic Church Declares Official Saints:

And if you are wondering about the 2 miracles approved by the Church for the canonization of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, be sure to read The Miracles Approved By the Church for the Canonization of Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

2. Read books about Mother Teresa. Here are two in my collection that I plan on reading during our "Couch Conversations" this week in our homeschool: Stories Told By Mother Teresa and Mother Teresa: A Life in Pictures. Speaking of Mother Teresa books, be sure to check out the two brand new Mother Teresa picture books that Jessica at Shower of Roses reviewed and is giving away!

3. Listen to Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta Glory Stories CD from Holy Heroes

4. Watch this short video Mother Teresa's Bio: Life of a Healer:

5. Color Mother Teresa Quote Coloring Pages from Look to Him & Be Radiant

6. Download 2 free coloring pages in honor of Mother Teresa from Brother Francis

7. Throw a St. Teresa of Calcutta party like Elizabeth did at Coppertop Kitchen (and be sure to enter her great Shining Light Dolls giveaway! There's still time...Winners are being announced on Sept.1!)
Update: St. Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa) Shining Light Doll is now being sold on Amazon.  Free shipping for Prime members!  We are a big fan of these dolls in the Smith house!

8. Purchase and use the St. Teresa of Calcutta Printable Packet from Real Life at Home

9. Watch the Mass of canonization of Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta live from Rome on EWTN. Program times are: 09/04 at 4:00 AM ET, 11:30 AM ET, 10:00 PM ET; 09/05 at 12:00 AM ET

10. Give a friend, family member or yourself beautiful handmade Mother Teresa of Calcutta jewelry that my blogging friend Jennifer at Catholic Inspired has created.

This week during our homeschooling I plan on doing several of these ideas leading up to Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta's canonization Mass.  Such a beautiful, historic time in our one, holy, catholic, apostolic Church!  I hope my blog post has inspired you to find ways to honor this special servant of God in simple and fun ways!

Update: We ended up having a canonization party a few days before Saint Teresa's canonization date. Check out How Our Family Celebrated the Canonization of Mother Teresa!

Canonization of 2 Popes Faith Folder Lapbooks

This post contains affiliate links.

Last Sunday, April 27, 2014, our family celebrated Divine Mercy Sunday and the canonization of 2 Popes by 2 Popes.  You can read about how our family celebrated this historic day in Church history HERE.

One of the joys of homeschooling my Cupcakes is that I get to learn about our beautiful Catholic faith with them.   We celebrated the election of Pope Francis last March 2013 and we all learned so much about this process.

Then it was Pope Francis, along with former Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, who canonized Saint John XXIII and Saint John Paul II on Sunday, April 27, 2014.  I wanted to teach our family, including myself, more about the canonization process so every day last week we worked on The Canonization of 2 Popes Faith Folder Lapbooks that I purchased from Emmanuel Books HERE.

This was a great activity to do last week since the first part of the week we completed our annual end of year testing that is required by our state each year. So after each day of testing, it was a nice break to discuss and assemble the lapbooks together.

The lapbook covered many different topics that you can read HERE.  We worked on a little bit of the lapbook each day, which took us about a week.  For each section, we would read it together, then we would cut it out and glue it to the folders in the area that was outlined.  There was alot of cutting and pasting involved, which wasn't what some of my children thought was total fun, but they survived and we all learned a thing or two along the way.  :)

I enjoyed the many conversations we had while doing this activity and my son was curious about how many Popes were between Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II, so we flipped through Lives of the Popes: Illustrated Biographies of Every Pope from St. Peter to the Present that I had to find out more information.  This is a beautiful, illustrated book with information about our first Pope, Peter, from 33 to 64 AD, all the way through to Pope John Paul II, who was Pope from 1978-2005).

Here are pictures from The Canonization of 3 Popes Faith Folder Lapbooks:

Such historical and exciting times we are witnessing in the Church today!  I'm hoping that celebrating such special days with food, fun, and lapbooks the memories of these times will stay with my our family for many years!

Celebrating Divine Mercy Sunday and Canonization of Two Popes!

Today is one of those days that our home, our domestic church, and our universal Church will remember like the day that Pope Francis was chosen.

This day is historic in so many faith-filled ways and I wanted our family to celebrate it and remember it.

Today is an historic day of 4 Popes. As stated in the link, "Never before have a reigning pope and a retired pope celebrated Mass together in public."

Today we celebrate the canonization of two Popes.  Jessica over at Shower of Roses has a great list of 7 ways to commemorate this joyous day with children.

HERE is a link to miraculous stories by two women who were healed through the intercession of these two popes.   Fascinating for sure!

Saint John XXII and Saint John Paul II, pray for us.

Since the canonization Mass in Rome was in the middle of the night our time, here is the Mass on YouTube:

HERE is Pope Francis' beautiful homily from the canonization Mass.|

I showed my family this parody that we all thought was clever and entertaining:

One of our favorite images of (now Saint) John Paul II is this PENCIL drawing by Cameron Smith, who is not related to me, but he and his wife are our 5th child's Godparents.  Does this not look like a photograph to you???  Amazing talent and such sweet, faith-filled friends of our family!

Image and prints found here: http://www.smithcatholicart.com/

For lunch we had some Papa John's..Holy Servants, Holy Vicars pizza!  I found the image of the "Papa Johns" floating in Facebook news feeds and I printed it out and taped it on top of our boxes.

Today is also Divine Mercy Sunday.  Find out more about Divine Mercy devotion HERE.  In this list of 21 Awesome Fact You Didn't Know about JP2, on fact #7 it tells the connection between JP2 and Sister Faustina and the devotion to the Divine Mercy image.

We also had some fruit from our "Divine Mercy fruit platter" filled with raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries.

And for dessert we colored Divine Mercy images that I printed out on card stock and put on top of our Divine Mercy "Sundaes".  Thank you Lacy at Catholic Icing for this fun and festive idea!

After our dessert, my husband led our family in The Chaplet of The Divine Mercy.

It has been a blessed day filled with a deeper love and understanding of Christ's universal Church and Jesus' infinite love and mercy!
